Marking a significant milestone for a home-grown movie, Lions Gate Films International has acquired international sales rights to "Waiting," an independent feature that was shot in New Orleans and partially financed by a local bank with loan guarantees from Louisiana taxpayers.
Lions Gate appears to see dollar signs in "Waiting."
" 'Waiting' is an outrageous comedy with a likable, talented cast in the vein of 'Van Wilder' and the 'American Pie' series," Nick Meyer, co-president of Lions Gate Films International, told Variety.com on Tuesday, when Lions Gate announced the international distribution deal at the Cannes Film Festival. "If these films are any indication, 'Waiting' should have wide appeal in the large youth market and beyond."
"The Lions Gate sale is a much bigger deal. Based in Vancouver with offices in Los Angeles, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. last year acquired Artisan Entertainment to become the nation's largest production and distribution company not owned by a major media conglomerate. As such, Lions Gate has the financial ability to roll out 'Waiting' for a wide release. "
